Grammatical Notes:

  • בָּרוּךְ (barukh) is the qal passive participle masculine singular form of בּרךְ (to bless, kneel), from berekh, meaning knee: Blessed.
  • הִפְלִיא (hifli) is the hiphil perfect 3rd person masculine singular from פָּלָא (be marvelous, wonderful). In the Hiphil this verb means "to cause a wonderful thing to happen."
  • חַסְדּוֹ (chasdo) is the 3rd person masc singular construct of חֶסֶד (kindness, lovingkindness, mercy): his steadfast love.
  • בְּעִיר מָצוֹר (be'ir matzor) comes from 'ir (city) and matzor, which comes from צוּר (tzur), to bind or beseige: in a beseiged city.
