Blessed be the LORD God of Israel

Printer-Friendly Version

Barukh Adonai Elohim

God of Israel, God of Wonders...

Psalm 72:18 (BHS)

Blessed be the LORD God, the God of Israel,
who only doeth wondrous things (Psalm 72:18 KJV).

Jewish tradition requires that we personally bless the LORD no less than 100 times a day. Many Hebrew blessings found in the prayer book (or Siddur) include the opening invocation, "Baruch atah, Adonai eloheinu...," which may be translated "Blessed are You, Lord our God...."  In the verse above, we can see that this phrase derives from the Scriptures themselves: Blessing God for his marvelous deeds is always right, always the appropriate response to Who he is: for He alone does truly wonderful things.

It is interesting to note that the word translated "blessed" (baruch) is related to the Hebrew word for "knee" (berech), as is the word for "blessing" (brachah), thus implying an association between humbling ourselves (i.e., kneeling before Him in recognition of His blessedness) and receiving personal blessing from Him.

Yes, "Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus the Messiah, who hath blessed us with all spiritual blessings in heavenly places in Messiah Jesus" (Eph.1:3):

Ephesians 1:3
Ephesians 1:3 (HNT)
